Abstract:This study created a scenario that employee intended to provide a prohibitive voice to his (or her) supervisor, and examined the leadermember exchange and employee proactive personality’s effect on employee’s defensive silence to supervisor. The results indicated that leadermember exchange has negative effect on defensive silence, and proactive personality has no effect on defensive silence. Proactive personality moderates the relationship between leadermember exchange and defensive silence such that when proactive personality is high, leadermember exchange cause lower defensive silence than when proactive personality is low. The results extend the related employee voice and silence theory, and also encourage the organization to reduce the employee defensive silence with effective measures.
